What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the term given to pain stemming from irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body and runs from the lower back to the buttocks and down the legs. It ends just below the knee. This nerve controls different muscles in the lower legs. While sciatica is often associated with lower back pain, it’s not just limited to the lumbar area. Pain may radiate to the legs and arms. Other symptoms of sciatica include numbness in the leg and tingling sensation in the feet and toes. Sciatica is a common symptom of several different medical conditions.

Conditions include herniated disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, tumors, spondylolisthesis and injury in the spine.

When a herniated disc occurs, it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. The other medical conditions often pinch or compress the root of the sciatic nerve. Those at risk for sciatica include people in their 30s and 40s with deterioration of discs, jobs that require heavy lifting and a sedentary lifestyle.
